Plugboats Guide to Electric Boat Exhibitors METSTRADE 2024
The 36th METSTRADE Show is on this week (November 19-22), in the RAI Centre of Amsterdam. METS stands for Marine Equipment Trade Show and it is the world’s largest trade exhibition of marine equipment, materials and systems, taking over 11 halls at the Centre and more than 112,200 m2 (1.2 Million sq ft) of floor space.
There are dozens of country pavilions situated throughout the halls as well as specialized pavilions, including the Next Generation Propulsion Zone featuring 15 electric and hybrid motors, and the Foiling Pavilion, which is not dedicated to electric foilers but where electric technology will have a big presence.
In total there will be at least 65 electric boats exhibitors showing off their products, with new product launches and presentations, and electric boats extremely well represented in the nominees of the two awards that take place during METS week: the DAME Design Awards and IBI Boatbuilding Awards.

The French innovator in hybrid add-on electric motors will be introducing their latest advance in navigation and control technology, the ‘Virtual Anchor’, which automatically maintains a boat’s position without the need to deploy a physical anchor. Using GPS and the NMEA2000 compass, the Virtual Anchor continuously adjusts the
boat’s position according to environmental conditions (currents, wind, etc.), ensuring
that the position is held while protecting the seabed and eliminating the need for
physical mooring.
The next-gen autopilot also allows for precise navigation along a pre-programmed route, and is compatible with chart plotters from major manufacturers (Garmin, Raymarine, Simrad, B&G, Lowrance, and Furuno). The autopilot compensates for drift caused by wind and currents, and optimizes electrical consumption and the hybrid motor system to help reduce fuel consumption, harmful emissions, and the carbon footprint of users. Boating enthusiasts can enjoy a more sustainable navigation experience without sacrificing performance.

EPTechnologies
Danish drive system and battery developer EPTechnologies will have the world premiere of their FALCON outboard. The 130 kW (≈ 175 hp) drive uses an axial flux motor, which radically reduces the weight and improves the power-to-weight ratio.Motors with comparable power typically weigh in at as much as 120 kg (264 lb), while the FALCON comes in at less than a quarter of that: 27 kg (60 lb).
The company says the key to the efficiency and performance of the outboard is that it was designed from ground up as an entire electric outboard propulsion system, instead of retrofitting electric components onto platforms originally intended for combustion engines. The compact, lightweight build minimizes drag, improves efficiency, and maximizes onboard space for additional batteries.
In addition, the FALCON uses a steering system in which the propeller and the propeller hub rotate, while the motor block remains stationary. This setup protects sensitive engine components and greatly improves weight distribution and stability, particularly in twin outboard configurations.
The 360° rotating propeller hub also offers outstanding manoeuvrability in confined spaces, eliminating the need for additional bow thrusters. The FALCON’s shaft length can also be adjusted. METS Stand: 03.331 | 03.330

Molabo
Molabo, the German manufacturer known for its unique 48 volt safe-to-touch 50 kiloWatt drive, recently announced a new 25 kw electric boat motor that uses the same patented technology, and the world will get its first look at METS.
The new Aries i25 inboard delivers 25 kW of high torque power (about 35 hp) and virtually silent zero emission operation for displacement boats up to 6 tons, sailboats up to 10 meters (32 feet), and small planing boats up to 6 m (20 ft).
The benefit of the Molabo motors is the safety of the 48 volt system. Voltages above 60 volts can be life-threatening and require special safety measures and certified personnel for installation – increasing both complexity and costs. The Molabo motors requires no special training or equipment, and the cable sets are lower maintenance than high voltage cables as well as being less susceptible to faults. METS STAND: 03.243

Rim Drive Technology
Rim Drive Technology, the only marine motor manufacturer that focusses entirely on the efficent propellerless rim drive configuration, is showcasing two new motors at METS: their Entry Level Outboard and Steerable Outboard.
The Entry Level has been deisgned in response to operators looking for an affordable solution with all the functionalities they require. The trim and tilt bracket offers five positions and is suitable for all standard steering cylinders available on the market. This make refitting an ICE boat exceptionally easy.
The Steerable Outboard has an impressive 320-degree rotation and 360-degree propulsion system, configurable to lower angles if needed. This function ensures optimal maneuverability and supports remote operation. RDT technicians are able to provide remote support through adjustable settings and the motor owner can adjust the AZECU (Azimuth Electric Control Unit) on location using a phone or laptop. Seabird Technologies
Seabird, who designed and built the Racebird – the high performance, all-electric foiling boat used in the international E1 Series – has an intriguing announcement with only teaser information that they will be “unveiling the future of marine propulsion” on Tuesday, November 19 at 12:30 in their METS Stand 07.426
TEMO
TEMO, the French electric outboard manufacturer which recently expanded into the United States, will be showcasing SEASIDE, their new range of modular electric pods. The new motors are designed to be “Plug & Play” and are available in three power levels – 450, 1000 and 3,000 watts (≈ 1, 2 and 6 hp) – making them suitable for boats from 500 kg (1,100 lbs) to 3 tonnes (6,600 lbs).
The new pods integrate “hairpin” type stator motors, allowing an energy efficiency of 88%, with an optimized acoustic signature for a silent navigation experience. One of the major innovations is the removable battery system that allow users to flexibly manage their autonomy. Grouped in a rack, these batteries can power all the equipment on board and be recharged individually at the dock or at home. In practice, each user can select the number of cassettes they need according to their uses.
The SEASIDE range is now available for shipyards and will be accessible to the general public during the next sailing season.

Next Generation Propulsion Zone
This is the second year METS has presented the Next Generation Propulsion Zone. The RAI Centre is huge, and much of it is organized by country, which sometimes makes it difficult and time consuming to hunt down the electric boat exhibitors. The Next Generation Propulsion Zone brings 15 of them into the same exhibit area, for an efficient way to see the electric propulsion manufacturers in a short period of time. Exhibitors:

DAME Design Awards
The DAME Design Awards are now in their 33rd year of celebrating marine product design in all its forms, including styling, functionality, innovation, ease of use, and packaging. Each entrant submits a €150 fee, which goes to a charity, this year it is SailWise, which provides multi-day, challenging water sports activities and holidays for people with a physical or sensory disability, an intellectual disability or non-congenital brain damage.
The Jury is drawn from a mix of experts that typically includes those with naval architecture, boat design, interior design, user application and marine market experience and skills.
Last year was quite the year for electric boats, as every single nominee in the propulsion category was electric, and Oceanvolt walked away with not just the award for propulsion, but also the overall award.

Wider Boats WiderCat 92 is a hybrid catamaran equipped with a serial hybrid propulsion system that can also travel in zero emission mode. The 28-metre catamaran has twin 500 kW Lucche e-motor and 360 kW battery capacity powering an eShaft with twin screw props.

Sanlorenzo and Siemens Reformer – green methanol to hydrogen fuel cell system is capable of transforming green methanol into hydrogen and then into electrical energy to power all the yacht’s hotel systems without storing hydrogen on board.
Zerojet and Prestol Composites – Spark Boat electric tender is a next-generation electric tender with electric jet propulsion by New Zealand’s ZerJet that offers both eco-conscious consumers and performance-focused professionals a new standard in boating.
Category: Sustainability Project of the Year
Nominees in this category will have made changes to improve their business and/or production processes that have resulted in objectively measurable reductions in environmental impact at point of manufacture and/or through a boat’s full lifecycle.
Beneteau Group – Island Cruising Boat Concept uses a new ‘mono-maran’ hull design, two Fischer Panda 10kW pod motors, a large capacity 48 V Lithium battery pack and 22 kw 48 V DC range-extending genset. Noise and vibration are minimized and energy management is fully autonomous, which reduces fuel consumption by 50%.
Sunreef Yachts – structural foam from recycled PET bottles is a material developed by Sunreef in which the structural foam is used between sheets of composite. The construction of an 80-foot sailing catamaran requires approximately 2.4 tons of this foam core, equivalent to recycling around 600,000 PET bottles. Not only is the foam core made of recycled plastic, the final product is also fully recyclable at end of use.

Nominated boats and yachts under 8m LOA will show demonstratable reduction in environmental impacts compared to immediate past practice across development, manufacturing, and lifetime use.
De Antonio Yachts – E23 was named the official electric boat of the Barcelona America’s Cup.

IMPACD Boats – IMPACD 680 is one of the company’s boats 3D printed from recycled material and electrically propelled for a clean, sustainable and green future for the next generation.
Riva – El-Iseo is the company’s first all-electric model, a version of the 27 foot Iseo, named for the lake where young shipwright Pietro Riva first started a small shop in 1842 to repair local fishing boats which had been ravaged by a ferocious storm.

Foiling Pavilion
This is the second year of the Foiling Pavilion at METS, which showcases technologies that are having a huge impact on all boating by bringing cutting-edge racing technology to consumer products.

Start Up Pavilion
METSTRADE and Yachting Ventures joined forces on the Start-Up Pavilion to showcase the latest innovations and products from startups, that include a few promising electric boating young companies.
- ESEA Propulsion is launching a very low profile 75kW electric outboard with a fixed powerhead close to the waterline and 180° swivelling leg for steering.
- Helios Marine (07.300E) manufactures modular and flexible IP67 marine battery systems using LiFePO (lithium iron phosphate) cells
- Supiore will be showing its new Solar Bimini, a sunshade with 1kW of solar panels integrated into its construction.
